Defining a bio-sourced product

Biomass is a material of biological origin, excluding materials incorporated into geological and/or fossilized formulas. Biobased products are defined by the standard NF-EN 16575, Biobased Products-Vocabulary.

Biomass is a material of biological origin, excluding materials incorporated into geological and/or fossilized formulas. Biobased products are defined by the standard NF-EN 16575, Biobased Products-Vocabulary.

Derived from plant biomass, bioresources are many and varied.

A product of mineral origin is "geosourced".

A biobased product does not necessarily have a better environmental record than a fossil- or mineral-based product.

The French biobased chemistry and materials sector mainly uses the following plant resources : cereals (wheat, corn, etc.) oilseeds (rapeseed, sunflower, palm, etc.) sugar beet, fiber plants (flax, hemp, etc.) and co-products of the forestry and wood processing industries (maritime pine). These products can be mixed with others to form complex products (detergents, cosmetics, plastics, paints, glues, etc.). Plant fibers are used directly in the production of insulation, concrete and composites.

We only include products for the building, fittings and decoration sectors.

Most "biobased" products are "partially biobased".
The NF-EN 16575 standard tolerates 1% to 100% biobased material in a product to use the term.
The main resources selected by our partner KARIBATI are : wood, oil straw, wool, hemp, flax, miscanthus, recycled paper, recycled cotton and cork.

AMAT considers as "biosourced" a product containing at least 60% of one of these elements in its composition.

The "Biosourced Product" label

There is a LABEL PRODUIT BIOSOURCE.
This label was created to distinguish materials incorporating a significant proportion of biomass from the NF-EN 16575 standard, which considers a product incorporating only 1% biomass to be biosourced. The label sets a minimum of 70% for insulation materials and 25% for plant-based concrete.

The label is based on 4 pillars : the reference frame - the materialization - the management body - the control body. It can be localized by marking the sector : French, Walloon, local.

Our partner KARIBATI is manager and certifying body.
